Mallanna story at a glance

Mallana (Vikram) is a CBI officer who works in economic offenses wing. With the help of his friends Mallanna grants the wishes of needy people who tie letter to the tree in Mallanna temple of Srisailam. It gets revealed that CBI officer Mallanna is one who robs money from Billionaires and donates to the devotees of Mallanna temple. Meanwhile, DGI (Prabhu) is handed over with the task of tracing Mallanna. The rest of the story is how DGI chases the Mallanna.

    Before the shooting of the film started, the film unit had a photo shoot and they created enormous hype to the film. But with confused screenplay, the movie settled as an above average at box office. The movie was made with a budget of 40 crores and collected 60 crores at box office.
  • Highlights

    • This is first combination of Vikram and Shriya Saran
    • Vikram turned as singer in this film and also crooned 4 songs in this film.
    • Super Star Krishna donned the role of CBI Chief in this film.
    • Initially Bollywood beauty Katrina Kaif was approached for the female lead role in the movie. She accepted the project but with dates issue, she backed out.
    • The inauguration of the movie took place on 22 September 2007 at the Devi Paradise theatre in Chennai. For the event, a unique electronic invitation, made in China, was presented to guests who were invited. The invitation was the size of a laptop and featured an 8 minute trailer of Mallanna. Each invitation had cost about Rs. 15,000, making it the most expensive invitation in Indian film history.
    • Raghuvaran was initially roped for the role of Shriya’s father in this film. But with unexpected death of Raghuvaran, Ashish Vidyarthi was replaced.
    • The director of the film Susi Ganeshan, himself played a crucial role in this film.
    • Pachcha Gaddi koseti song was re-used in this film.
  • Sidelights

    • In November 2007, the shooting was halted temporarily due to an accident occurred at the shooting spot at the Chennai Boat Club.  A pole erected on the sets unexpectedly fell on the director's head resulting in an injury.
    • During the shoot, the film unit adopted two villages near Madurai; Sangampatti and Gandhi Nagar, to shoot in initially and then to provide basic amenities like school and proper roads among other things to the villagers for a year.
