Khaleja story at a glance

Sitarama Raju (Mahesh) is a taxi driver who comes to Rajasthan searching for a person’s family. There he meets Subhashini (Anushka) whose presence brings in bad luck and loss to Mahesh. Miles away, there is a village in which people die of some strange disease, the guru of the village (Rao Ramesh) sends Siddhappa (Shafi) in search of a god sent man, Mahesh, who can save the village. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

    Khaleja was in production for about 3 years due to several personal and professional reasons of Mahesh. When released audiences were not able to digest the concept of ‘a god sent man’ and the movie failed to rake in good numbers at the box office. But the movie was in a way a turning point in Mahesh’s career. It portrayed the comedy angle and timing of Mahesh which helped his career a lot at later stages.
  • Highlights

    • Khaleja is the second combination of Mahesh Babu and Trivikram. Earlier they have team up for a movie Athadu.
    • It was for the first time, Anushka and Mahesh teamed up.
  • Sidelights

    • Mahesh Babu’s grandmother passed away during the movie shoot. She was very dearer to Mahesh. He took a long time to come out of the shock delaying the movie production. Later his wife Namratha’s parents also passed away in a Road accident delaying the shooting proceedings further.
    • Producer of the movie, Singanamala Ramesh was arrested midway in the movie production on the allegation that he is a ‘binami’ of factionists Suri and Bhanu.
    • The budget of the movie increased by several folds as the movie making got delayed. He also made one more movie with Pawan Kalyan at the same time which also got delayed due to Pawan Kalyan’s election campaign.
