Overview
There are many fans who watched her films just to see her smile. When she smiled, her peculiar tooth showed even more beauty she possessed. It was only possible to her to excel in funky roles or which had a tinge of sweet anger. She excelled in performing jealousy on screen. Though Jamuna was born in the historic city Hampi in Karnataka, she is adored and embraced by Telugu Audience as a lady of Telugu Lands. Whenever one remembers the roles like Satyabhama (Sri Krishna Tulabharam), Gowri (Mooga Manasulu), Kaikeyi (Sampoorna Ramayanam)- Jamuna’s name is invariably remembered.
Despite her place of birth being Hampi, Jamuna had her childhood and early education in Duggirala, Guntur district. Her father shifted to this place on business. Interestingly, Jamuna studied in the college where prominent actor Jaggaiah worked as a lecturer. Right from her childhood, Jamuna had keen interest in stage acting. Mahanati Savitri was her role model. With the encouragement of Dr. Garikipati Rajarao, Jamuna entered showbiz at an early age. Her debut film was ‘Puttillu’. Though the film did not get commercial success, Jamuna’s acting was greatly praised. Bangaru Papa, which was directed by B.N.Reddy fetched her more name. It is interesting to see that she acted in ‘Bhagya Rekha’ and ‘Pooja Phalam’ which were incidentally directed by B.N.Reddy. By getting a chance to act in Vijaya Production’s Missamma and Annapurna’s Donga Ramudu, she was strikingly noticed by Telugu Film Industry. Along with them, Anupama Production House made ‘Muddu Bidda’ and ‘Eedu Jodu’ became exemplary for Jamuna’s superior acting skills. During the filming of Bhookailas, she had differences with senior actors like Sr.NTR and ANR. As a result, she had to distance herself from their films. It was when she acted more with actors like Jaggaiah. After an understanding with the senior actors by insistence of Chakrapani, one of the producers from Vijaya Productions she acted with them in Gundamma Kadha. With Sr.NTR she acted in ‘Gulebakavali Kadha’, ‘Manchi Manishi’, ‘Sri Krishna Tulabharam’, ‘Sri Krishna Vijayam’, ‘Dhanama Daivama’, ‘Ramudu Bheemudu’ and ‘Deeksha’. With ANR she acted in films like ‘Mooga Manasulu’, ‘Poola Rangadu’, ‘Nomu’, ‘Sreemanthudu’ and ‘Manasu- Mangalyam’. She acted with Haranath in ‘Naadee Aada Janme’,’Letha Manasulu’,’Maa Inti Devatha’ and ‘Tahseeldar Gari Ammai’ with Sobhan Babu. Her performance as Kaikeyi in Bapu’s Sampoorna Ramayanam earned her many accolades. She also acted in Telugu version of Nargis starrer Mother India (‘Bangaru Thalli’)with supreme ease. She contested in politics and stood for elections as well.
Jamuna will always be remembered for her funkiness, sweet looks and great performance. She was a heartthrob for a generation of Telugu Cinema Lovers.
