Vishwanatha Nayakudu story at a glance

Though Dasari Narayana Rao entered into film industry by writing story for a folklore films, he confined to social dramas as a dialogue writer,  director, actor and a producer most of the time. After a series of hits, Dasari’s interest went to Mythological films. He wanted to make a film on Ekalavya but it didn’t materialize due to certain reasons. But he could make two period films such as Tandra Paparayudu (1986) and Vishwanatha Nayakudu (1987). Vishwanatha belongs to the Sri Krishnadevaraya era and a great patriot. He defeats his own father for patriotism and presents the latter in front of the Emperor. During the young days of Dr.C.Narayana Reddy, he wrote this story as a great Epic. This story has all the features suitable for a feature film. Patriotism, Aggression, Romance, Conflict and Sentiment are present quite well. Dasari made this film with high production values.

Story Details:
During the days when Sri Krishnadevaraya (Krishnam Raju) along with his able minister Mahamantri Timmarasu (Prabhakara Reddy) was ruling the Vijayanagara Empire, the region flourished with arts and culture having Hampi as capital.  Allasani Peddana( J.V.Somayajulu), Mukku Timmana (Raavi Kondala Rao), Tenali Ramakrishna (Padmanabham) were the part of Ashta Diggajas – the eight poets in the king’s court. The Army General Nagamanayaka (Sivaji Ganesan) and his son Vishwanatha Nayakudu (Krishna) earned a great name as fantastic warriors. It is when a friend of the emperor, and king of Madhura-  Chandrasekhara Pandya (Kantha Rao) gets hardships. The troops of Raja Raja Chola (Ranganath) attack the Pandya kingdom and occupy the lands. Chandrasekhara immediately asks Krishnadevaraya for help. The latter readily sends army troops under the ownership of Nagamanayaka , and the troops fight over Cholas and relive the Pandya lands. Things take a serious turn from now when Nagamanayaka gets an evil desire of occupying the throne of Madhura and he announces the same. Krishnadevaraya gets shocked with this news and decides to teach the traitor Nagamanayaka a big lesson. But he knows it is not easy to confront a powerful Army General like Nagamanayaka and hence the emperor sends Vishwanatha Nayaka for the task. Vishwanatha Nayaka marches with the troops to Madhura and brings back his own father in front of the emperor. Good natured Emperor forgives Nagamanayaka. He appoints Vishwanatha Nayaka as the Emperor’s representative in Madhura. Jayaprada can be seen as the dancer Kalavathi in the king’s court.

Performances:
Krishnam Raju is wonderful as the Emperor. His body language and royal looks suited the role perfectly. Sivaji Ganesan excels as  Nagamanayaka and his role had many shades. Veteran actor Jaggayya’s dubbing added more value to his character. Krishna is fantastic in the title role of Vishwanatha Nayakudu. Kantha Rao is decent as the Pandya King of Madhura and Ranganath is good as Raja Raja Chola of Chola dynasty. K.R. Vijaya acted as the wife of Nagamanayaka. Dhulipalla, Mohan Babu, Nirmalamma acted in respective roles. The ashtadiggajas were suited perfectly as well.

Technical Aspects:
Dasari made complete justice for a period film of this sort with drama, sentiment, justice and amazing production values. The casting was done brilliantly such that every actor suited the role so well. J.V.Raghavulu’s music added a fresh feel to the film and Suseela got Nandi award for her rendition in ‘Kavijana Samaja Bhoja’.
