Criminal story at a glance
Criminal is one of the feel good action thrillers which arrived in Tollywood during the 90s decade. Nagarjuna’s charm, good music, suspense element and Manisha Koirala’s performance made this film highly memorable in Telugu Cinema.
Story Details:
Dr.Ajay Kumar (Nagarjuna) is an NRI doctor who arrives in Hyderabad on a holiday. But when he witnesses a woman’s death due to lack of funds for hospitalization, he decides to stay back in India and continue free medical service through his project “Amma Hospitals”. Dr.Pratap (Sharat Babu) approves his friend Ajay for the project and it is when Swetha (Manisha Koirala) a doctor in Pratap’s hospital falls for Ajay. She decides to tease Ajay by making phone calls without revealing her real identity. Ajay starts wondering who this mysterious caller is and at the same time Ramya (Ramya Krishna) a Police Officer falls for Ajay. She incidentally is a roommate and best friend of Swetha. But when Ajay finds out it is Swetha who is the mysterious caller he starts liking her too. Ramya realizes this and remains silent on her love towards Ajay. Ajay and Swetha get happily married and one day she understands that there is organ trafficking happening in her hospital. The hospital owner (Kota Srinivasa Rao) sends a serial killer (Gulshan Grover) to finish off Swetha brutally and the crime falls on Ajay instead. Ajay is found guilty and is imprisoned. Rest of the film is about how Ajay avenges his beloved wife’s death by escaping from the prison.
Performances:
Nagarjuna is wonderful as the good natured doctor, a great lover and a person with revenge. He looks brilliant in the song sequences and share good on screen chemistry with Manisha Koirala and Ramya Krishna. Manisha Koirala is flawless as the female lead and does brilliant job in acting too. Ramya Krishna does another great performance as the silent lover of the hero and a duty minded police officer. Sharath Babu, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Satyanarayana, Nassar get some pivotal roles.
Technical Aspects:
Though the film is inspired from Hollywood film the Fugitive starring Harrison Ford, Mukesh Bhatt makes the indigenous touch doesn’t go missing. Music by M.M.Keeravani is a huge asset for this experimental film and Telusa Manasa became an all time hit. Direction by Mahesh Bhatt is novel and crisp.
