Coolie No 1 story at a glance

Coolie No 1 is one unique film which was a commercial hit along with establishing Venkatesh as one of the heroes who can perform well in a role with mass appeal. The film has everything needed for a commercial hit and influenced many writers to come up with similar subjects since then.

Story Details:
Raju (Venkatesh) is a coolie in Secunderabad Railway Station who is high on courage and self respect quotient. He meets Ranjani (Tabu) daughter of a rich industrialist (Rao Gopal Rao) in tricky circumstances and both of them have a serious clash because of her attitude towards poor and arrogant nature. Raju insults Ranjani in front of public and this makes her angrier on him.

Things get serious when Ranjani grills Raju into a fake legal case and it is when he decides to teach her a lesson. Rest of the story is about how the relationship between Raju and Ranjani changes and what is the real story behind Raju’s past.

Performances:
Venkatesh is seen in two different get ups in the film – one as the coolie and other as a stylish NRI from Singapore. He performs well in both characterizations and looks likeable.  He performs well in the serious sequences and looks very good in the song appearances. This was Tabu’s debut in Film Industry and it was evident that a great actress was born with her performance in this film. She looks ultra glamorous in songs and this doesn’t mean she couldn’t perform. She gives a classy performance as the typical rich kid and pulls it off with perfection. Rao Gopal Rao is ideal as the arrogant rich father and does brilliant job. Mohan Babu and Brahmanandam offer huge comedy relief. Sarada, Nirmala, Kota Srinivasa Rao played some important roles in the film.

Technical Aspects:
Dialogues by Paruchuri Brothers have tremendous mass appeal and they deliver another commercial hit. Music by Ilaiyaraaja is a huge asset for the film as the songs are power packed and replete with fun elements. Kottha Kotthaga Unnadhi, Kalaya Nizama, Kila Kila Mane, Dandalayya- every song from the film was a hit. The film is made with high production values and shot in locations like Singapore and Amsterdam. Direction by K.Raghavendra Rao is picture perfect and he makes sure every element- Fights, Songs, Sentiment, Comedy are in the right proportions.
