Sundarakanda (1992) story at a glance

Sundarakanda is an excellent film made on the midst of student life and family values with Venkatesh in the lead. Venkatesh played the role of not a youngster but the responsible role of a Lecturer for a college. Great songs, fun elements, good performances, and elevating scenes made it a memorable film in the acting career of Venkatesh. It also earned Meena, the female lead of the film a very good name as an actress perfect for family oriented roles.

Story Details:
Venkateshwarulu (Venkatesh) arrives to the town as a Telugu lecturer to a college. The college is notorious for mischievous kids Roja (Aparna) is one brilliant student in a class – yet a huge prankster. After few misunderstandings and confusions, Roja apparently feels that Venkateshwarulu loves her and things go serious when the latter warns her not to keep such feelings in mind. Roja doesn’t take his warning seriously but challenges him in return saying she is the only one who would be marrying him. Venkateshwarulu understands the seriousness of the situation and he marries a woman from an orphanage (Meena) hoping that it would solve the issues.  Roja helps Venkateshwarulu’s wife in every respect as the latter is quite innocent. But a shocking truth is revealed about Roja which makes everyone shocked about it.  She apparently suffers from cancer and rest of the film is about how Venkateshwarulu and his wife take care of her.

Performances:
Venkatesh is perfect as the little old lecturer yet young at heart. His look with glasses and formal wear suited the role greatly and the histrionics were brilliant. He proved that he is unique with respect to comedy, songs and performance compared to his contemporaries for this film. New comer Aparna played the role of Roja with amazing ease and she suited really well for the role of a student.  Meena is instantly likeable as the lady from orphanage who doesn’t know anything about cooking or household work. Brahmanandam gives huge comic relief by playing the role of Venkateshwarulu’s classmate but who still remains as a student. Gollapudi Maruthi Rao, Kota Srinivasa Rao played some important roles in the film.

Technical Aspects:
The story of the film was penned by K.Bhagyaraja with utmost perfection and fun elements as well.  Dialogues by Paruchuri Brothers are perfect as always and they again prove they make a great combination with K.Raghavendra Rao. Music by M.M.Keeravani makes sure the film doesn’t have any boring moment.  The songs were fresh sounding and at the same time melodious. Songs like Sundarakandaku, Aha Mama Illariki, Inka Inka and Akasana Suryudundadu became all time hits. Direction by K.Raghavendra Rao is very good with right balance of emotions and commercial values.
