Thatha Manavadu story at a glance

Thatha Manavadu is a defining film in SVR’s career as an actor as well as a commercial successful film. This film gave a great beginning to the prominent director Dasari Narayana Rao.  It is interesting to note that after coming to Film industry aspiring to become an actor, and working under dialogue writers and directors, the dialogue writer turned Dasari ventured out to direction without a glamorous subject but choosing SVR and Anjali Devi in the lead roles. It is indeed courageous to cast prominent comedian Raja Babu as hero and Vijanarnimala as his female lead. Dasari got the silver nandi award for his excellent work in this film. His journey with music director Ramesh Babu began with this film and continued for years to come. Meghasandesham- the classic also came from this duo.

Story Details:
Rangayya (SVR) and Seethamma (Anjali Devi) are a hard working couple. They work very hard and accumulate money in order to make his son Anand(Satyanarayana) study medicine in the town. However, Anand starts bluffing to a rich girl Geetha(Rajasulochana) saying that he is a rich guy and falls in love with her. He even marries Geetha without his parents’ permission. The struggling couple Rangayya and Seethamma become homeless as a result of this and arrive to town in hope of some employment. Rangayya joins as a daily labor while his wife Seethamma gets a servant job in an affluent house. She gets devastated after coming to know that the house is none other than Anand’s residence. But she hides the fact that she is Anand’s mother and works there. Anand’s son Giribabu (Raja Babu) comes to know about the truth. He meets Rangayya and tells he is the latter’s grandson. Seethamma falls ill and dies in dire circumstances. Her son Anand, who is supposed to perform his mother’s last rites gets busy in his father-in-law’s 60th year birthday celebrations and doesn’t bother to care his parents. However, Giri Babu performs the final rites of his grandmother. Rangayya also dies unfortunately in an accident. Giri Babu finds his father quite heartless and he plans to teach his parents a lesson by planning a drama along with his lover Rani (Vijayanirmala) and her father (Gummadi). The film gets a happy ending with the wedding of Giri Babu and Rani.

Performances:
SVR literally gives life for the role of Rangayya in the film. For people who feel SVR can act only in aggressive or energetic roles, he makes them re-think with his superior performance as a loving father who gets heartbroken with his son’s behavior. Anjali devi performs par excellence in the sentimental scenes which are like a cakewalk for a tremendous actress like herself. Satyanarayana gets a memorable role as the practical son of hard working parents. Raja Babu gives a supreme performance as the considerate grandson who worries about their well being. Vijayanirmala and Gummadi perform very well in their respective roles.

Technical Aspects:
Dasari Narayana Rao did a triple role of Dialogue and story writer along with the director in the film. His dialogues question the losing family values in our society and his direction is crisp. The scenes are masterfully written and he gets best of performances from every actor. It is indeed a challenge to choose a debut subject which is sans glamour. Music is another huge lifeline of the film with songs like ‘Anubandham Atmeeyatha Antha Oka Bootakam’ sung by Ramakrishna, ‘Soma,Mangala Budha’, ‘Nookalammanu Nene’ became good hits.
