Katakatala Rudrayya story at a glance

After his directorial debut in 1973 with Tatha Manavadu, Dasari confined himself mostly to small budget films since then. But in between he got an opportunity to work with Sr.NTR (Manushulantha Okkate), and ANR (Devadasu Malli Puttadu). He chose the subjects of family drama, issues as topics for his films. Katakatala Rudrayya is a film which deviated him from his usual style of family drama as this film features a hero who is burning with revenge and progressive storyline. After setting a new trend with this, he made similar films like Sardar Paparayudu and Bobbili Puli in the same category. Though the basic storyline remains the same for all these films- the action drama comprising of  revenge, revolution, and extreme anger became a new success formula. While narrating this story to Krishnam Raju, Dasari told him that it would change his usual image. Despite having an acting debut with Chilaka Gorinka in 1966, Krishnam Raju couldn’t get soft hero roles. Therefore he was confined to soft villain, or a full length villain and at times as a second hero. As a result, he acted in the film Krishnaveni (1974) produced by himself. But as the film is completely based on Vanisri’s character, Krishnam Raju couldn’t get a good break as an actor. It was when he got Bhakta Kannappa and Amara Deepam which changed his overall image miraculously. Then, Katakatala Rudrayya arrived which strengthened his angry young man image. Sivametthina Satyam, Puli Bidda, Rangoon Rowdy,  and Bobbili Brahmanna which came later featured Krishnam Raju in similar image. Dasari knows quite well that the audience like Krishnam Raju in a rough look instead of a romantic hero image. Nevertheless, he added glamour with Jayasudha’s character in order to gain the appreciation of women audience.

Story Details:
The film features Krishnam Raju in a dual role as father- son respectively. However, they don’t share the screen. The older Krishnam Raju and the heroine (Jamuna) are lovers and plan to get married. But unfortunately, he dies in a road accident. By the time the heroine is pregnant and in order to save the family’s good name she leaves the baby in a trash after the delivery. The baby grows up into an anti social element because of the hardships he faces throughout childhood. He is none other than Katakatala Rurdayya (Krishnam Raju). He always burns with anger because his mother left him in a trash can and he is an illegal child to his parents. It is at this time he meets a sensible woman (Jayasudha). The rest of the film deals with how he fights the obstacles he faces, and discovers himself in this process.

Performances:
Krishnam Raju is terrific as the angry young man who hates his life and the way he is treated since childhood. The anger was perfectly showcased by him throughout the film. Jayasudha is wonderful as the female lead. Jamuna gets a limited screen presence but does well. Rao Gopala Rao is at his usual best.

Technical Aspects:
Dasari knows the perfect success formula depending on the actor’s image and screen presence. He also knows the strengths and weaknesses of an actor and how they should be projected to the audience. That is why he wrote a gripping screenplay and storyline.  Music by G.V.Raghavulu contributed to much success of the film. Veena Naadhi Teega Needhi had ample glamour and the song which features Jayasudha and Jayachitra stealing pockets had good comedy relief for a serious film of this sort. The song ‘Eeduru Galiki Maa Dora Gariki Edho Gubulu Regindhi’ filmed between Ramakrishna and Jayachitra became a good hit.
