Vagdanam story at a glance

The period 1961-67 can be termed as a golden age for Krishna Kumari as an actress. She bagged roles demanding glamour and performance alike opposite stalwarts like Sr.NTR ,ANR in this period. One such memorable film for her is Vagdanam. Prominent writer Athreya invested and even directed this film. Another prominent writer Dasaradhi got introduced to Telugu Cinema as lyric writer with this film. In fact, Dasaradhi wrote ‘Kushi Kushi Ga Navvuthu’ for ANR starrer Iddaru Mitrulu before Vagdanam but as this film released three months prior to the former, Vagdanam remains to be his first film in records. A popular singer Vasantha was introduced in this film in which she lent her voice for ‘Kittaiah Puttina Dinamu’.

Story Details:
Vishwanatham (Nagaiah) , Ranganatham (Gummadi) and Jagannatham (K.Venkateshwara Rao) are childhood friends. Vishwanatham is an affluent man and good natured. He financially helps his friend Jagannatham who is in trouble. Jagannatham has only one son named Suryam (ANR). He is an intelligent person and studies medicine. Vishwanatham sends money supporting Suryam’s education. Meanwhile Jagannatham’s wife dies and he gets addicted to drinking in order to forget the sad news. As a result, the financial situation gets more troublesome for Suryam. Vishwanatham starts helping more for Suryam’s family and this is not liked by Ranganatham. He says that it is waste to help a drunkard but Vishwanatham doesn’t bother his friend’s words. Vishwanatham has a beautiful daughter Vijaya (Krishna Kumari) and he plans to marry her to Suryam. Ranganatham doesn’t like this as he plans to capture his friend’s property by getting his son Chalam (Chalam) to marry Vijaya. Suddenly, Jagannadham dies due to too much of alcohol addiction and unable to digest his friend’s demise, Vishanatham also dies. Ranganatham tries to turn tables by making Suryam who becomes a doctor by then, to establish a clinic to serve the poor.  He injects poisonous thoughts to Vijaya against Suryam. When things are going worse, Vishwanatham’s well wisher Ramadasu (Relangi), his wife Balamani (Suryakantham), son Padmanabham (Padnabham) make Vijaya realize the truth, save her from the evil plans of Ranganatham and get her married to Suryam. The film ends on a happy note when the promise made by two friends Vishwanatham and Jagannatham is fulfilled.

Performances:
ANR is ideal in the role of a doctor and a perfect son. He shares a good chemistry with Krishna Kumari. Nagaiah is great as the good natured Vishwanatham who helps his friend in every walk of life. K.Venkateshwara Rao is wonderful as Jagannatham who has different shades of emotions to perform. Gummadi gets a negative role and he does it with great ease. Relangi and Suryakantham do a great job as Ramadasu and Balamani respectively. Chalam and Padmanabham are adequate in their roles.

Technical Aspects:
Though the base story is from Bengali novel Datta by Sharath Chandra who also wrote Devdas, Athreya and Sivaramakrishna adapted it perfectly for the Telugu native feel. Despite being a serious story, the film is no less in entertainment values. Music by Pendyala is melodious with songs Naa Kanti Papalo Nilichipora, Vanne Chinnelanni Unna Chinna Daanive, Paapirama Prabho, Tappetlo Taalaloi, Kaasipatnam Choodara Babu became good hits. However, it is Sri Nagaja Thanayam (Harikatha Song) penned by Sri Sri which stole the hearts of Telugu Audience. Athreya’s direction is fun filled and thought provoking at the same time. His dialogues are heart touching as always.
