Kaalam Maarindhi story at a glance

With the advent of Mahatma Gandhi, a social evil called untouchability was eliminated in India. Everybody is same in the eyes of God. Mahatma Gandhi has told strongly that the barriers of caste and creed have to be crossed and an idealistic society which looks at everyone with same respect has to arrive. Kaalam Maarindhi is a unique film which deals about a woman who is a harijan by birth but grows up in a Brahmin family after lot of troubles and hardships. She later marries a Brahmin guy and the film portrays her journey in a brilliant manner. Though the film is based on a social message, K.Vishwanath made sure the film is not preachy at any point of the time with lengthy dialogues or emotional content. This film made Sobhan Babu- Sarada as one of the biggest hit pairs in Telugu Cinema.

Story Details:
The film is based on a village backdrop where a landlord Lakshmipathi (Gummadi) and his wife Annapurna (Anjali) have a daughter Geetha (Geethanjali after growing up). Lakshmipathi’s sister Taayaru (Pushpakumari) and her husband Seshavataram (Sakshi Ranga Rao) have a son named Krishna (Chandramohan after growing up). Kotesu (Rao Gopala Rao) the servant of Lakshmipathi has a daughter named Shanti (Sarada) who is looked after adoringly by her father.

Once Lakshmipathi’s farm is attacked by goons and during the attempt to rescue the place, Kotesu sadly dies. None of Kotesu’s relatives come forward to take care of Shanti, who is just a months old infant. It is when Lakshmipathi takes the initiative and brings her to the family. The whole village boycotts his act and his sister’s family doesn’t understand his goodwill either. His wife Annapurna also questions his decision. Despite this opposition from the world, Lakshmipathi looks after the child with extreme care and affection. He sells his lands and leaves for the town. The kids Geetha and Shanti grow up and study in college. Krishna also studies in the same college and he is unaware of his uncle’s daughters. Meanwhile, Lakshmipathi looks for ideal alliances for his daughter Geetha. A guy named Srinivas( Sobhan Babu) doesn’t have parents and is brought up under the care of grandparents. He is a good actor and a singer and a college student in the same town. He promotes Gandhian principles through his stage plays. Srinivas comes to meet Geetha as a prospective alliance and agrees for the match. But Geetha doesn’t accept wholeheartedly because she loves Krishna. The story takes turns and it makes Srinivas come closer to Shanti instead. They start liking each other and it is when the question of Shanti’s real caste comes up. Rest of the film deals about how Srinivas overcomes all these difficulties and wins Shanti’s hand in marriage.  The film says that one has to change with the changing times (Hence the title Kaalam Maarindhi).

Performances:
Sarada is wonderful as the Shanti- A woman with self respect and a person with strong values. Her natural portrayal as the woman with traditional as well as modern values has been exemplary. She shares great chemistry with her co-star Sobhan Babu as well. Sobhan Babu is adorable as the ideal youngster who promotes Gandhian values and has broad minded thinking. Gummadi is exceptional as Lakshmipathi who fights with the society to look after Shanti. Geethanjali is decent as the second heroine. Chandramohan gets a good role as Krishna. Anjali is adequate as the wife of Lakshmipathi and Pushpakumari- Sakshi Ranga Rao are good as the typical narrow minded couple. Rao Gopal Rao gets a pivotal role as the faithful servant Kotesu.

Technical Aspects:
Story, Screenplay and direction by K.Vishwanath speak millions about his skills and prowess.  He takes every effort in not sounding preachy and made sure the social message is carried out with entertainment factor. S.Rajeshwara Rao’s music is melodious and the song Ye Thalli Paadenu Jola (Sung by Ghantasala- Suseela) is wonderfully written by legendary poet Devullapalli Krishna Sastry. Mundarunna Chinnadani Andamemo became a good hit duet those days.
