By coming to Telugu Cinema has Hero with Thene Manasulu in1965, Krishna gave the hero image a new definition with films like Goodhachari 116, Asadhyudu, Nenante Nene, Takkaridona- Chakkani Chukka and Vichitra Kutumbam. It was a watershed moment for Krishna in the beginning of 1970s. His marriage with Vijayanirmala and huge appreciation for their onscreen chemistry made him think on professional lines. The couple established a home banner Padmalaya with the apparent idea that the remuneration costs would be saved and their films would fetch returns. But their first film in home banner, Agnipariksha was a flop. Without feeling dejected they thought what the audience are really looking for. They decided to make a film which was never before seen in Telugu Cinema with Cowboy backdrop, high technical values, great locations and brilliant production values making it on par with Hollywood film. He asked Arudra, who wrote him the story of Goodhachari 116 giving Krishna a new look.
Story Details:
The basic storyline of the film is inspired from Hollywood classics Mackennas Gold, The Good Bad and The Ugly and For a Few Dollars more.
Amarvedu dynasty was attacked by the British at the time of Bobbili war in South India. Just before the British are about to strike this dynasty, two friends Daanaala Dharmayya (Gummadi) and Pagadaala Subbayya(Mukkamala) hide the treasure in a cave of five doors, very far away. They lock the treasure with five keys and the two friends separate, so as to make the key’s whereabouts unknown to the British . Pagadala Subbayya escapes to Gadwal and Daanala Dharmayya escapes to the court of Kurnool . Krishna Prasad (Krishna), who fights for equality of the poor with rich, against the new government, finds a highway robber Nakkajittula Naaganna (Naga bhushanam) captured by a couple of men. The government announces that one who captures Nakkajittula Naaganna, will be awarded with 1000 varahas (gold coins). With a plan to earn money and help the poor people, Krishna Prasad secures him with ropes and submits him at the court. Nakkajittula Naaganna is made to sit on horse and he is tied to a two-pole gibbet at the court. Krishna Prasad, hiding behind a tree little far away, shoots the ropes of the gibbet, making Nakkajittula Naaganna to escape along with him. They share the loot later. With the loot obtained from the government, Krishna helps the poor.
One blind man, a past servant of Amervedu court, who knows where the keys are, accidentally utters about the treasure at highway liquor dhaba. By torturing the blind man, Sathyam (Satyanarayana) knows the clue of Daanala Dharmayya in Kurnool. Satyanarayana gets hold of Daanaala Dharmayya, but kills him in haste. Radha (Vijaya Nirmala), on coming home with a pot of water from a pool nearby, finds her father Daanaala Dharmayya in fatal condition. Daanaala Dharmayya, who is unaware of the murderers, is about tell something, utters his friend's name Pagadaala Subbayya and dies. Radha thinks that her father was killed by Pagadaala Subbayya. In fact Pagadaala Subbayya, while dying because of old age, reveals the place of treasure to his son. He also reveals that he had given the keys to Komarayya, a retired constable in Kurnool.
The rest of the film is about how Krishna Prasad comes to know about this treasure and finds it before the wrongdoers would lay their hands on.
Performances:
Krishna is fantastic as Krishna Prasad- aka the hero of the film. The cowboy costumes suit him well with great ease and his histrionics in action sequences work wonders. Nagabhushanam gets a memorable role as Nakkajittula Naganna and it is a cakewalk for him. Vijayanirmala shares a great chemistry with Krishna and acts well. Satyanarayana, Gummadi , Rao Gopala Rao, Prakasa Rao and Mukkamala suit their respective roles.
Technical Aspects:
Huge credit goes to writer Arudra in successfully adapting a foreign concept of Cowboy films to Telugu arena. The dialogues go well with the storyline and every scene is well written- keeping the audience engaged. Adi Narayana Rao’s music is another asset and songs like Korinadhi Neraverinadhi, Katthilanti Pilla, Elagundhi Elagundhi Abbaya became good hits. Direction by K.S.R. Das is grand and the film is shot on great production values.
