An immortal love story made and re-made as a film for the maximum number of times in the history of Indian Cinema till date! DEVDAS. The novel written by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee has seen numerous cinematic interpretations over the past few decades. The first ever milestone was this 1936 Bengali/ Hindi bilingual directed by PC Barua. The Hindi version had KL Saigal playing the doomed lover while Barua himself essayed the role in the Bengali version. This first Devdas was released in the year 1936, which had KL. Saigal and Jamuna Barua playing the lead roles. The story was a critique on the prevalent cast system. Devdas and Paro love each other but couldn’t get married as they belong to different castes. The dejected lover finds solace in the arms of Chandramukhi who in turn re-invents herself through love. Paro is married off to a wealthy widower and Devdas with his health deteriorated by excessive alcohol, finally dies at her doorstep. The film hugely influenced all the subsequent interpretations and Devdas is re-made almost 12 times in 6 different languages.
