Its not the time for Prostitute Stories

More Stories

Usually, there is a favorite season for Film industry. Genres like Action Hungama and Comedy are there ubiquitously but at times a different season arrives- Prostitute stories are one such genre. Until quite recently, this hungama has been there on a high.  Actresses like Charmi, Shriya, Haripriya and Veda adorned the role of a prostitute. Many more such stories are yet to come. However, not even one film coming in this genre is able to make it big at the Box Office. Pavithra and Abbai Class Ammai Mass bombed at the Box Office terribly. Prema Oka Maikam even joined the disaster list! There is no hope for the upcoming films from this category either.  Why did this season turn to a disaster? What is the reason behind it?

Shriya acted as a Delhi Prostitute in Pavitra directed by Janardhana Maharshi. This film was almost like a second final innings to Shriya. People were interested to see Shriya in a prostitute role when the film’s promotion began. The posters and promos were impressive as well. After some good dialogues in the trailer, the craze increased for the film. Nevertheless, this effect paled down in the actual film. Daily Serial styled taking, lack of power in the story and narration are the main causes of this film’s failure.  Janardhana Maharshi’s dialogues were appreciated, but not his directional skills. This is the reason Pavitra joined in the list of flop films. In Abbai Class Ammai Mass Haripriya was seen as a prostitute. Though she acted well in the role, the story didn’t have the strength to take the film forward. To make things worse, it looked like a mix up of multiple Hindi films.  Nobody liked the film because of this reason. Prema Oka Maikam also became a mediocre film. People thought Charmi was the lead role in the film, but her role was quite limited in the main film.  She acted in a guest role, eventually leading to disappointment.  The film gained flop talk right from the day one because of zero novelty in the story and narration.

While directors define the role of prostitute with the equation Glamour minus Acting, the story should be very strong to make these two aspects work in the right balance.  These aforementioned films made a huge mistake in this point.  A film like Chameli was successful not just because it is about a prostitute but because of the great emotions the story carries.  Instead of catching this point, many people wanted to “cash” the opportunity.  A role of prostitute is not complete with Husky looks and few double meaning dialogues.  There should be a captivating story between the lead characters.  The scenes should be written in such a way that, one feel sympathetic towards the prostitute’s role.  Directors failed miserably in this regard and that is why the stories became unsuccessful.

Now Veda and Udaya Bhanu are going to be seen in a Prostitute role for the upcoming projects. Both of them are out dated and how can people believe they can show the right glamour in this role? Will the audience accept them? This is the main doubt. Will the roles chosen by them disprove this doubt?  We have to wait for a litter longer to find out!
