Varna is an upcoming romantic fantasy film starring Tamil star Arya and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles. The music for the film is composed by Harris Jayaraj while Anirudh Ravichandran composed the background score. Varna is a dubbed version of Tamil original Irandam Ulagam and here is an iQlik exclusive audio review for the album:

The album begins with uplifting Tholi Merupa sung brilliantly by the wonderful duo- Karthik and Chinmayi. The string section supports the vocals perfectly taking off to percussion and the lyrics sound very beautiful and definitely not like a dubbing film. Chinmayi complements Karthik at her best in this track.

Oke Kavyam sung by the legendary S.P Balasubrahmanyam arrives next in a swiftly admirable fashion. The orchestration is rich with strings, piano and violin made in best use. The lyrics are beautifully penned and the song grows brilliantly on the listener. Interludes are wonderfully crafted and the track is replete with ideal fusion of music instruments.

The feel good factor gets better with the next track Chandravanka sung by Gunjukunna fame Shaktisree Gopalan along with Gopal Rao and Satyan. The power packed guitar strings join the celebration with the flute and mildly paced rhythm. The track has some unmistakable freshness along with the Harris Jayaraj’s stamp carried to it. However, the excessive Tamil slang would have been avoided in the singing department.

Nuvva Nuvva arrives next in a trance like manner loaded high on energy. Vijay Prakash and Sowmya Mahadevan do a brilliant job in the singing department and the song doesn’t go overboard anywhere, despite the paced up ambience.  The beauty of the song is its melody intermixed well with trance genre.

The album takes a turn with Paalalle in a sad note with Vijay Prakash and Sowmya Mahadevan with the right emotional quotient and the string section adds up to the local drums.  The orchestration is crisp and underplayed giving it a higher impact.

Rakkassi arrives next like a whiff of breeze with progressive orchestration sung well by Hariharan, Sriram and Megha.  The song has an aggression associated with it but just like all the other songs in this album, it has a mellowed back nature.

Varna Theme is the last track in the grand album with well used chorus and defines the album in the right chord.  The symphony takes command over the track with confidence and gives it an international soundtrack feel and is done really well.

Verdict:
Varna is one of the grand albums which arrived from Harris Jayaraj. Appropriate selection of singers and great orchestration are the main strengths of this album. However, the dubbing flavor arrives in some songs which could have been easily avoided. In that case, it would have become one of the top albums in Telugu Cinema for the year 2013.
