There was a time when item numbers were meant to be an accessory to a film just for that extra bit of masala. But today, item song is not just a concept but a tradition in cinema. There is hardly a film that doesn’t have an item song and things have got hotter with the top league heroines flaunting their curves.
But this has also given rise to a new discussion, are item numbers the dead-end for heroines? Is it meant for those heroines who are no longer getting opportunities? Will they do it at the end of their career? Well, there are two sides to this debate. To a large extent, some of the starlets have taken this route to sustain.
At the same time, item songs have become the quick buck route for top league heroines who charge a bomb just for shaking a leg. In the recent past, the likes of Tamannah, Shruti Haasan have also smoked the screens on fire with their oomph. Is this phenomenon correct may be a grey area question but as long as the audience is getting entertained, how does it matter.
