There was a time when films especially the small and medium budget ones had an insurance policy of sorts to recover their investment. This was the satellite rights for TV channels. The bare minimum slab used to be around Rs 1 crore or in worst case scenario, it was nothing less than Rs 60 lakhs. Cut to the present, the scene has reversed completely and in fact it is giving jolts of shocks to the makers. For small cinemas, literally no buying is happening. The TV channels are opening their wallet only for big star and big budget flicks because that’s where the maximum revenue is getting generated for them.
So now, the channels have come up with a new strategy. They are saying “We cannot buy the film but we will screen the movie and share the revenue.” This is more to do with flop flicks and usually the quantity of flop category films is high. Eventually, the film is screened two or three times and a little amount is given to the makers. They are saying at least this is better than having nothing. Sad but true!
