Hijras aka Transgenders are one of the most ignored in the society. In spite of the discrimination and stigma, they are striving hard to survive and earn respect.
But Puri Jagannadh is one bold, dashing and unconventional director who respected them and tried to create space for them in his films (of course in his own terms). For instance, in Chirutha the character called 'Nachimi' (a transgender) performed by Ali was a great entertainer. Even in his Pawan Kalyan starrer Telugu movie Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu, there is a key action episode choreographed upon transgenders.
Keeping aside the debate over the novelty of their characters in his films, the transgender community in Hyderabad has great love and respect for Puri. On the eve of Puri's birthday today, there was a long queue of transgenders at Puri's office today. They eventually met and wished him.
Well it is indeed a sweet gesture by the community and even Puri made time for them! Once again wishing this inspiration figure a Happy Birthday!
