Family Movie Year 2014!
Posted On 29 Dec 2014 - 07:35 AM

2013 was a crucial year to Tollywood with respect to trends. The lost glory of Family movies began with Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu and Attarintiki Daaredi. However, it is 2014 which redefined the concept of family dramas coupled with novelty and stunning moments. Family drama films were never new to Tollywood since times immemorial. The sentiment factor never failed at the silver screen but the new millennium gave the genre a backseat and paved way for New Age Cinema involving youngsters and chocolate boy love stories.

But 2014 hasn’t been disappointing for family audience with some most memorable films gracing the silver screen and also becoming good hits. The Akkineni’s family film Manam would be the first film to be remembered in this category. Starring most of the Akkineni family members including the legendary ANR, the film showed the new age family values along with the foundations in which we come from. It was a lovable farewell for Nata Samrat ANR and also entertained the young audiences. It was really a whiff of fresh air in the midst of films having meaningless violence, bloodshed and repetitive comedy.

Next arrived Venkatesh’s most anticipated remake Drushyam. There were many eyebrows raised when it was known that Venky would be reprising the role of legendary actor Mohanlal from the original but Venkatesh has done a splendid job as the caring father. It was indeed surprising to watch Venky who always prefers to be stylish in attire with simple cotton clothing and the guy next door look. Despite no commercial elements, the film managed to gain people’s admiration for the honesty and freshness in content- most importantly, it was the family values shown which made it a fantastic hit.

Versatile director Krishna Vamsi also chose the family drama subject Govindudu Andari Vadele with Ram Charan who often had the angry young man image. Though the film couldn’t gain the expected appreciation, it sure is an indication of family film trend which is in high vogue with Tollywood right now! Sreekanth Addala, another young director came up with Mukunda launching the Mega Hero Varun Tej in a youthful family entertainer.

Let us hope the family drama trend continues in the coming year with more vigor, fun and explore new dimensions of the evergreen genre!
