RRR for the Oscars

RRR, Rajamouli’s historical drama, has recently made headlines. The creators of the pre-Indian Independence fiction are adamant about winning an Oscar, no matter what. The makers of the movie have decided to bid for the Academy Awards again, this time in the general category, refusing to be discouraged by their failure to be India’s official entry to the 95th Academy Awards. At the box office, the film reportedly brought in above Rs 1000 crore. Get deep into the details of RRR right below.

Oscars Wants RRR more than RRR Wants the Oscars: Why?

Dated on 6th October, it was revealed that the makers of RRR had nominated their beloved movie for the 95th Academy Awards in as many as 15 categories. This was a big step as the Film Federation of India had passed on the action-drama entertainer (FFI). Instead, Chhello Show was chosen as India’s recognized Oscar entry. Millions of moviegoers were devastated as RRR had started a craze and would have been a surefire hit, not just in India but all over the world. Therefore, there was joy when the producers stated that they are still in the running for the Oscars.

The fact is that the Oscars need RRR to once again set records for viewership. For those who are unaware, except for 2019 and 2021, the television ratings for the Academy Awards have been steadily declining. Check out the ratings which are as follows:

  • In the year 2015, 37.3 million people watched the awards program.
  • The figures were 26.6 million, 32.9 million, and 34.4 million viewers in 2016, 2017, and 2018 respectively.
  • The audience did rise to 29.6 million for the 2019 event, but by 2020 it had fallen to 23.6 million viewers.
  • Due to the pandemic, the ceremony was held on a smaller scale in 2021, which resulted in a sharp decline in viewership to just 10.5 million.
  • The figures did increase to 15.36 million for the ceremony in 2022.

In this situation, RRR might prove to be a lifesaver. After the Baahubali film series, the fan base of S. S. Rajamouli grew like crazy. However, what was unexpected was how much of an impact it had on the American audience. Videos of western audiences dancing, cheering, and hollering during RRR screenings can be found all over the internet! Many Hollywood stars have tweeted how much they enjoyed the movie. The Russo Brothers, who had traveled to India in July to advertise The Gray Man, also praised RRR.

RRR Sets an Oscars FYC Campaign

Despite being ignored for Best International Feature selection for India, S.S. Rajamouli’s worldwide blockbuster RRR keeps moving forward at top speed in the direction of the Academy Awards. The movie’s campaign has officially begun, and as was to be expected, its U.S. distributor Variance Films is looking for nominations in all major categories, comprising Best Movie, and Best Actor for its stars Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rou Jr, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Ajay Devgn, and Best Original Screenplay.
