Aa Okkati Adakku story at a glance

The decade of 80s was the era of Jandhyala comedy which is considered to be classy and thoroughly witty and entertaining. E.V.V.Satyanarayana, who worked as an assistant director for Jandhyala,  carried a similar style but with his own unique touch after becoming a full time director.  Aa Okkati Adakku can be called as a cult comedy classic which features nonstop entertainment, fun elements and a great message for the audience as well. Rajendra Prasad, who was a regular for Jandhyala’s comedy centric films is shown as a hero who isn’t invincible, but a middle class youngster who blindly believes in astrology and superstitions! The glamorous Rambha made her acting debut with this film as well. It was remade in Hindi as well as Mr and Mrs. Khiladi with Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla in the lead roles.

Story Details:
The film deals with the journey of Chittibabu (Rajendra Prasad) a middle class youngster. Despite being a gold medalist in studies and having intelligence, he blindly believes in astrology and his luck charts. Many astrologers tell him that exactly after one year, he would become an Emperor. Chittababu takes this prediction too seriously and doesn’t apply for jobs or plan to do some hard work to sustain his family. He has a mother (Nirmala) and a sister(Latasri) who always pester him get herself a suitable bridegroom.  Chittibabu’s house owner (Allu Ramalingaiah) is a funny retired station master who still lives in the job profession! Royyala Naidu (Rao Gopala Rao) is a hard working businessman who believes in determination and struggle in order to be successful. He has a doting daughter Rambha (Rambha) who falls in love with Chittbabu’s funniest talk and interactions. Royyala Naidu has a funniest assistant (Brahmanandam) who formerly works as a news reader and has a habit of telling sad news with laughter. When she recommends him for a job under her father’s company, Chittibabu turns down the offer saying he would become an Emperor anyway. Royyala Naidu gets furious with this attitude and tells his daughter to forget Chittibabu. But Rambha threatens her father that she cannot live without marrying Chittbabu. A helpless Royyala Naidu agrees for their marriage but on one condition- he asks Chittibabu to pay an amount of Rupees 1 Lakh in order to marry his daughter to prove the worth and hard work. Chittibabu fails to pay the amount and the marriage somehow happens. But the real fun starts when differences occur between Chittibabu and Royyala Naidu as son in law and father in law respectively.  Royyala Naidu doesn’t let Chittibabu live with his wife because he failed to give the amount. After some requests Royyala Naidu obliges Chittibabu’s request of paying the amount in four installments. The story takes lot of dramatic turns and eventually Chittbabu realizes that hard work and determination are more important than blind predictions.

Performances:
Rajendra Prasad is hilarious as Chittibabu throughout the film. His talent doesn’t confine here because he excels in sentimental scenes as well. He does a great job as a realized youngster and shares a perfect on screen presence with veteran actor Rao Gopala Rao. Rao Gopala Rao is fantastic as the hard working entrepreneur. His unique dialogue delivery is an asset for this role. Rambha is decent as the female lead and performs well as a woman who is stuck between her husband and father. Brahmanandam is amazing as the funniest assistant. Babu Mohan plays the role of an astrologer who has a typical way of saying the word “Poompuhar!”.  Nirmala is very good as the mother of the hero. Latasri gets a memorable role as hero’s sister who is anxious to get married. Allu Ramalingaiah is amazing as the retired station master.

Technical Aspects:
Dialogues by L.B.Sriram are fantastic throughout the film. The one liners between Rajendra Prasad and Rao Gopala Rao such as  ‘Veesavu Le Joku’ became a common way of conversation between Telugu People.  The film is rich in visuals with the beauty of Vizag shown wonderfully. Songs are shot mostly in and around Vizag and at Araku Valley area. Music by Ilaiyaraaja is a huge asset for this entertainer as songs like ‘Rajadhi Rajanu’, ‘Vareva Manava’, and ‘Paavurama’ becoming all time hits. Direction by EVV is crystal clear and a laugh riot.
