Shankar Dada MBBS story at a glance

Shankar Dada MBBS is a remake of Bollywood super hit Munnabai MBBS starring Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi in the lead. The remade version had Chiranjeevi and Srikanth in these lead roles.  This version became as successful as the original-becoming one of the top grossers in the release year 2004.

Story Details:
Shankar Dada (Chiranjeevi) and his assistant ATM (Srikanth) are a famous don duo in the city who perform settlements relating to crime and wrong doings. However, Shankar’s father(Girish Kharnad) always wishes his son to become a doctor and hence when his father arrives in the town, Shankar creates a fictitious hospital named “Satya Prasad Charitable Hospital” and convinces his father that he is a successful doctor in the city.Shankar’s dad coincidentally meets his old neighbor Dr.Ramalingheswara Rao (Paresh Rawal) and they decide to get Shankar married to the latter’s daughter Dr.Sunitha (Sonali Bendre). But Ramalingshwara Rao comes to know soon that Shankar is a crime don but not a doctor. He insults Shankar’s parents leading to severe grief of Shankar. With all this happenings, Shankar decides to join a medical college and get an MBBS degree- to teach a lesson to Ramalingeshwara Rao.

When Shankar arrives in the medical college by using all his crime influence and some entertaining sequences, he slowly develops a care and concern towards the patients and staff of the college and hospital. He meets Dr.Sunitha but he doesn’t know she is the daughter of Ramalingeshwara Rao. At one point of time he starts helping out patients by making them feel good and going against the ways of how the hospital is run. Ramalingeshwara Rao finds this threatening and tries in every way to get Shankar out of the premises but fails everytime. The film then goes to higher levels of thinking where the doctor has to treat patients with good will and care- but not just like some specimens without feelings.
Rest of the story is about what happens to the rift between Shankar and Ramalingeshwara Rao and how Shankar comes to know about Dr.Sunitha’s real identity- his childhood friend Chitti.

Chiranjeevi does right justice to the role of a crime don who is human at heart. The key scenes involving thought and sentiment were very well handled by him. He looks energetic in dances and his chemistry with Srikanth the assistant is commendable. Srikanth is very good as the assistant ATM, who is utterly loyal to Chiranjeevi in every frame. Sonali Bendre is wonderful as the female lead and looks elegant as the doctor. Paresh Rawal is mesmerizing as the strict doctor and a BP patient who laughs uncontrollably when he is in deep stress. Girish Kharnad is ideal as the father of hero and does what is exactly needed.  Rohit is very good as the cancer patient who takes life too seriously. Sharwanand is excellent as the youngster who attempts suicide.

Technical Aspects:
Though the original story is written by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani, Paruchuri Brothers made this film indigenously good with their own style of writing. The way Shankar tells Telugu proverbs in English was a touch added by them.  Music by Devi Sri Prasad is energetic and fun filled- which is what exactly needed for a film like this. Direction by Jayanth C Paranjee is crisp and entertaining.
