Mattilo Manikyam story at a glance
At an era when Bhanumathi began her second innings in career as an actress with Swargaseema (1945) after debuting with Varavikrayam(1939)- Gruhalakshmi(1967) challenged her career as an actress. It was when Mattilo Manikyam released which prolonged her gifted acting career. After the success of this film, Bhanumathi was the first choice for characters which demanded dominating nature, aggression and middle aged look. Another interesting fact is that Bhanumathi got the chance to design her own character in this film. In the initial story writing days of the film, Bhanumathi’s character doesn’t exist at all. In fact her role was of an old widow which ends in the first half itself. When Chalam the producer showed the story to distributors, they expressed the wish of changing the storyline and only then they will buy the film. Chalam showed the story version to Bhanumathi and requested her to change it as she likes and then the latter replaced the old widow character with Lalitha- the sister in law thereby creating a trend. She even penned her lines for the film. For people who follow Bhanumathi, this film would look too obvious that it is her work. She has been instrumental in making the film a huge success.
Story Details:
The film is set in a village backdrop where an innocent guy Manikyam (Chalam) resides with his family. He has a brother (Prabhakara Reddy) and a sister in law Lalitha (Bhanumathi). Because of his innocence, people in the village along with his brother take him for granted. Lalitha takes care of him all the time and keeps him in the right place like a mother. With her cleverness, domination and conversational skills she even teaches a lesson to the pawn broker Mallaiah (Dhulipalla). She questions his wrong doings in the public. As a result, Malliah develops a grudge on Lalitha’s family. He makes Manikyam drink on the day of the latter’s engagement and ruins the prestige of the family in public. Unable to bear the insult, Manikyam runs away from the home to city. With the help of a taxi driver( Padmanabham), he begins his career as a rickshaw puller and becomes a taxi worker later. Right then, he happens to rescue Lakshmi (Jamuna) and let her stay along with him. Lakshmi is well educated woman with good intelligence and talent but her only curse is being born in a prostitute family. As a result, everyone look down to her and the affluent families in the city eye on her. Lakshmi’s mother out of greediness for money plans to get her daughter into the prostitute profession. Lakshmi is well rescued by Manikyam at such juncture and she starts understanding the innocent nature and good will. She teaches him to study and with her intervention Manikyam transforms to a confident individual. He takes her to the village and Lalitha gets happy seeing a transformed Manikyam. Lalitha and Manikyam teach a lesson to the wrong doers of the village and Lakshmi gets married to Manikyam in the climax.
Performances:
Bhanumathi is simply brilliant in the role of Lalitha penned by herself. She gets the best out of her writing as well as histrionics for such an interesting role. Her confidence levels are so good that the audience would feel that every family should have a member like Lalitha. Chalam is highly convincing as the innocent Manikyam and a hard working individual. He shares a good on screen chemistry with Bhanumathi and his female lead Jamuna as well. Jamuna is extremely good as Lakshmi who is an earthly individual. Dhulipalla, Padmanabham and Prabhakara Reddy are good in their respective roles.
Technical Aspects:
The film is well written with a strong storyline having a great balance of sentiment, comedy and drama. It is made in a highly entertaining manner where the audience would never get bored of it. Music by Sathyam is a huge asset and Bhanumathi’s ‘Saranam Nee Divya Charanam’ is still heard in devotional backdrops. ‘Rimjim Rimjim Hyderabad’ became a tourism promotional song for Hyderabad. Mailavarapu Gopi, who had a less span of stunning career as a lyricist wrote ‘Malli Malli Paadali Ee Paata’ for this film which became a trademark birthday song. Athreya’s duet ‘Naa Maate Nee maatai Nilavali’ became a huge hit as well.
