Time pass film with no special pulling factor – Time is Valuable Jagratha!

Plot:

Krishnamurthy alias Kittu (Raj Tarun) is a mechanical engineer turned entrepreneur working at a garage along with his three besties (Vijay, Sudharshan Reddy & Praveen). Kittu falls in love with Baby (Anu Emmanuel), the daughter of IT Commissioner Adithya Narayana (Naga babu). Kittu & gang who aren’t aware of this fact fall prey to the commissioner’s trick which eventually drags them into kidnapping dogs. Baby who isn’t aware of Kittu’s problems learns about his kidnapping activity in an embarrassing situation and decides to call it quits. While Kittu is sandwiched between his break up and debts, he resorts to settle the issue with one final kidnap of a dog which unexpectedly invites notorious white collar blackmailer AR (Arbaaz Khan) into his life.

How did Kittu survive the lethal twists in his life and succeed forms the rest of the plot.

Performances:

Though Raj Tarun is the hero of the film, he can be seen as any other character in the film. Of course this is appreciable to an extent but in a mainstream film, expectations are naturally high upon a hero and Raj Tarun disappoints here.

Anu Emmanuel: Few build up shots early in the film and a lip-lock scene confirm that she’s the heroine in the film but as an actor she is yet to make the cut.

Arbaaz Khan: The film opens with his character AR (a ruthless white-collar criminal) and his menacing ways of ruling the system. Come on! This is the comeback of Arbaaz into Telugu cinema (after Jai Chiranjeeva) and a couple of additional buildup shots are a must! Guess the writer/director might have run out of ink/creative juices while etching his character. As a result, the shrewd villain turns dumb, dumber and dumbest as the film progresses. And Arbaaz is a director’s actor you know!

As usually, comedians shine more than any other character in the film – due credits to 30yrs industry Prithvi, Venu, Fish Venkat, Praveen, Sudharshan Reddy, Roller Raghu & importantly Raghu Babu. Both their characters and comedy work big time. While Vennela Kishore was under-utilized, Snigdha’s brief act (in the first half) was hilarious.

The rest of the cast including Raja Ravindra, Nagendra Babu, Sameer, Samrat, Kalakeya Prabhakar et al play significant roles.

Analysis:

Wondering if Sharwanand’s Express Raja is an inspiration (of any kind) to the makers!

Anyways our hero is a dog kidnapper – a Telugu hero… dog kidnapper... nah nah nah! Let’s add an engineering degree to him and make him an ambitious entrepreneur– sounds fantastic! Heroine is naturally a rich girl (for various reasons to be revealed in the film later).

Well can you afford time (= scenes here) for a feel good love story between them?

We’ve already committed a stylish and cold-blooded villain who ought to be outwitted by this dog-kidnapper (hero). Since it’s a ‘NO’, let them fall drag them together in a song. Let comedy lead your content OK?!

Time for some chai and samosa break… hurry up the twist– on a frank note decent enough to comeback for the second half.

The pre-interval mystery and (so-called) love track cannot sustain enough. Never mind! They are rightly aided by the confusion drama that works bigtime and the special intro of the encounter specialist (Raja Ravindra) brings back the interest (for viewers like me who are already waiting for the drama to conclude) in the film.

TADA! There comes Singapore Sirimalli (= item song) dragging the narrative further.

The heroine who has been kidnapped in the interval just flashes in welcoming the last segment of the film (i.e. climax). With the super smart villain already turning a buffoon, the confusion drama blended with Prithvi & Fish Venkat’s comedy and hero-heroine’s reunion makes it the super clumsy climax of recent times.

In a nutshell, it is the flawed writing that has to be blamed – for this storyline can be a decent dark comedy. Forget about direction, Kittu Unnadu Jagratha looks like a patient treated by too many doctors and finally discharged alive – goodness gracious!

Merits:

- Engaging First half
- Overall comedy quotient – special mention of 30yrs Prithvi & Raghu Babu
- Confusion drama in the second half.

De-merits:

- Lag in the second half
- No significant wow factors.

Music:

Anup Rubens’ music is decent enough but this genre deserves much better which might have made the right difference. The background score goes largely unnoticed with abrupt mixing at few instances.

Others:

If item songs alone can give you the typical paisa vasool feel, then Hamsanandini’s Singapore Sirimalle is for you!

Verdict:

Kittu Unnadu Jagratha (KUJ) is an engaging kidnapping comedy knit around dogs, kidnap, love, confusion and a mysterious “safe”.

Though the film loosely resembles Sharwanand’s Express Raja, KUJ lacks its integrity and remains out to be just a time pass film with no special pulling factor.
