Drohi (1948) story at a glance

When L.V.Prasad wasn’t getting many opportunities in Bombay, K.S.Prakasa Rao (Father of prominent director K.Raghavendra Rao) met him and called him to Madras by giving first chance as a director. Prakasa Rao used to work in Saradhi then. He came out later and established his home production house and made Drohi with L.V. Prasad in directional department. The film earned a good name commercially as well as a film which is thought provoking. The hero Kona Prabhakara Rao later ventured into politics and also served as governor after the film’s release. It is interesting to see that in an era of positive titles, the film was successful with a negative title. L.V.Prasad set a new trend by directing as well as acting in a role of a rowdy in the film

Story Details:
An affluent rich guy Gangadharam (Raallabandi Kutumbarao)and his right hand Raja (Kona Prabhakar Rao) exploit people in a town under the name of social service. Gangadharam’s daughter Saroja (G.Varalakshmi)makes friendship with Raja for the sake of pastime. Once she drives carelessly and hits an old man. She leaves the place without even enquiring how the victim is. The victim is treated by a humanitarian doctor named Prakash (K.S.Prakasa Rao) but still the victim dies. The victim’s granddaughter Seetha (Lakshmi Rajyam) becomes an orphan. Prakash gets her to his home and offers her shelter. Seetha joins in Prakash’s hospital as helping hand and does service to the people. In dramatic circumstances, Prakash happens to marry the arrogant Saroja. The couple face compatibility issues because Saroja is a ultra modern with lifestyle involving parties and boyfriends while Prakash is a service oriented man. Saroja also starts going out with Raja. Saroja develops jealousy on Seetha and she shuns her away from the house by imposing theft on her. Prakash gets infuriated with Saroja and gets Seetha released- thereby being a ray of hope for the poor. In the end, the poor public plan to attack Gangadharam’s house but Seetha pleads them not to get into violence. Gangadharam kills Seetha thinking that she is the only reason for the rebellion and for the destruction of his daughter’s married life. Meanwhile Saroja realizes that Raja is a cheat and returns to her husband requesting him to accept her again. The film ends with Saroja establishing a hospital under the name Seetha and helping her husband in service.

Performances:
Rallabandi Kutumbarao gives a memorable performance as the bad guy Gangadharam. Kona Prabhakar delivers his best in the role of Raja.  G.Varaakshmi does a great job as the arrogant Saroja and Lakshmi Rajyam gets a good role as Seetha.  K.S.Prakasa Rao is seen in a humanitarian role and he does great justice to it.

Technical Aspects:
Dialogues and Lyrics by prominent Telugu writer Taapi Dharmarao come out well with thought provoking lines. This is the debut film for Pendyala Nageshwara Rao as music composer. Direction by L.V.Prasad is witty as well as entertaining.
