Rajanna story at a glance

The film is set in Nelakondapalli, a village in Khammam district in Nizam Princely State of Hyderabad during 1947. Mallamma (Annie) is the daughter of Rajanna (Nagarjuna) who dies while fighting against Razakars.  Sambayya, an old man brings her up without letting the village know Mallamma’s background.  She is fond of singing and one day Sambayya takes Mallamma to Dorasani to seek her permission for Mallamma’s education. At this time, Mallamma happens to sing infront of Dorasani. Irked by this, Dorasani decrees Mallamma not to sing ever in her life. But Dorasani finds out that Mallamma continues to sing, she sets fire on the hut of Mallamma. She escapes and goes to Delhi with the help of music teacher Nassar. The rest of the story is how Mallamma overcomes the hurdles of Dorasani and meets Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru.

    The movie was made with a budget of 16 crores. Critics have hailed the film and it scored a decent hit at box office. The movie overall collected Rs.30 crores.
  • Highlights

    • This is Tollywood top director Rajamouli’s father Vijayendra Prasad second film as director. His first movie is Sri Krishna (2006) starring Srikanth and Venu.
    • Nagarjuna plays the character inspired by Suddala Hanumanthu a poet who inspired the Telangana people to fight against the Nizams. Suddala Hanumanthu son Ashok Teja is currently a noted lyricist in Tollywood.
    • Rajamouli supervised the action episodes of the film.
    • Actress Sneha paired up with Nagarjuna in this film for the second time after ‘Sri Ramadasu’.
    • After 6 years of gap Nagarjuna produced this film. His last film as producer was Mass (2004).
    • This film won six Nandi Awards.  Best Feature Film, Best Child Artist, best Playback Singer, Best Art Director and Best Character Artist were the categories and Nagarjuna received a special jury award.
    • Nagarjuna also received awards in Special Jury category in CineMAA awards and South Indian International Movie Awards.
  • Sidelights

    • A massive village and Bungalow set were erected near Jubilee Hills of Hyderabad for this film. It accidentally caught fire on 5 April, 2011 causing a loss of Rs. 70 lakh.
    • The film was to release on December 23 but with the response for the music, Nagarjuna released the movie a day before i.e., on December 22nd.
