Alluri Seetharama Raju established Krishna as an actor, producer, and a dedicated artist in Telugu Cinema. Krishna , who is ever ready for experimentation made this film in cinemascope. The story of Alluri Seetharama Raju and his courage is well known to Telugu Audience through literary works. Many stalwarts like Sr.NTR tried to make this into feature film before but couldn’t succeed. It was Krishna who could make a daring step to make this challenging project a huge success.
The film deals with the life story of Alluri Seetharama Raju (Krishna), a great freedom fighter who used to reside in Mannem forest area near Araku in Andhra Pradesh region. With the tribal rebellion, he fought against the wrong doings of the British general Rutherford (Jaggaiah). Incidentally, the film deals with his love story with Seetha (Vijayanirmala) in between. His valor and courage is suppressed by assigning him a death sentence by the British and he embraces it too- and questions the injustice which happens.
Krishna is the life and soul of the film. His portrayal of Alluri Seetharama Raju became an all time best in his career- where he emoted every scene with utmost perfection. The way he understood his role became exemplary for generation of actors to come. Vijayanirmala is adequate as the love interest of the hero and performs well. Jaggaiah is brilliant as the evil Rutherford with whom the hero confronts. His attire as a British gentleman and the accent was done well too. Gummadi, Rajanala, Rao Gopala Rao, Prabhakara Reddy, K.V.Chalam and Rajasri acted in respective roles.
The film was made on high production values by shooting in exotic Forest locations- to give the real feel of the backdrop. V.S.R.Swamy’s cinematography worked wonders on cinemascope. Maharadhi’s dialogues came out exceptionally well. Music by Adinarayana Rao is a huge asset for the film- the song “Telugu Veera Levara” was given the national award for Sri Sri’s phenomenal lyrics. Vastadu Naa Raju written by Dr.C.Narayana Reddy and Arudra’s “Ragilindhi Viplavagni” became highly popular. The composer Adi Narayana Rao wrote an English Christmas song as well for the film.
