Ananda Bhairavi story at a glance

K.Vishwanath was one director who brought back the Arts and Culture oriented films in Telugu Cinema through initial successes like Siri Siri Muvva and Shankarabharanam. Jandhyala, who worked as a dialogue writer for many of Vishwanath’s films made a film “Ananda Bhairavi” relating to classical dance in his own unique style which was appreciated and received well by the audience. Despite being a serious themed film, Ananda Bhairavi also featured amazing comedy – right to the typical mark of a Jandhyala movie.

Story Details:
The story deals with the plight of Kuchipudi dance in Andhra Pradesh during 80s era. It is a story of a great Kuchipudi teacher Narayana Sarma (Girish Kharnad) who is very passionate about Dance as an art form. During the times when Kuchipudi was looked down upon the people, Narayana Sarma decides to make his son Anand as his legacy in the art. But his wife, who thinks just like any other normal person, feels Dance cannot be a profession for her son. Against her husband’s will , she sends her son to her relatives town to get him educated well.

A distraught Narayana Sarma incidentally notices a girl named Bangari who performs gymnastic feats on the street, belonging to a lower caste. He finds her movements to be quite agile and decides that she would be an ideal student for him. But being a girl and from lower caste, she is opposed by the village authorities that she cannot even enter the temple. During the olden days, Kuchipudi dance was not taught to women for various superstitious reasons. But Narayana Sarma fights over the village, the system, and his family as well to make Bangari his student.  He leaves the house with Bangari and rechristens her with the name Bhairavi (Maalavika) and as she grows up- she becomes a phenomenal classical dancer.

Anand grows up in his uncle’s town and returns to his home as an educated man. Incidentally, Bangari is Anand’s childhood friend and very soon he comes to know that she transformed into a great dancer Bhairavi. Bhairavi witnesses a growth in her dancing career and at the same time loves Anand. But due to the caste differences and the intervention of Narayana Sarma, she moves away from Anand. Rest of the story is about whether Anand and Bhairavi get together to form a great raagam- Ananda Bhairavi!

Performances:
Girish Kharnad performs par excellence as Narayana Sarma- the strict dance teacher as well as a person who questions the superstitions in the society. Being a classical dancer in real life, he could perform with amazing ease. Kanchana gives the earthliness to the film as Narayana Sarma’s wife. Rajesh is good as the male lead and gives a decent performance. Maalavika as Bhairavi does well in dance sequences as well as emotional sequences.

The so called Sutthi-Duo introduced by Jandhyala generate evergreen laughs in this film as Father and Son respectively. The praasa dialogues rendered by Sutthi Veera Bhadra Rao to his son played by Sutthi Velu  are unforgettable. Srilakshmi bagged another wonderful comedy role as a lady who whistles whenever she goes through an emotional turmoil!

Highlights:
  • Jandhyala took utmost care in every aspect of the film to make it a classic. Though most of the style in which it’s made reminds us of Vishwanath’s films, which is quite inevitable – the unique stamp of Jandhyala is seen in this.
  • Being a film relating to dance and arts, Music is undoubtedly best in it. The songs Chaitaramu Kusumanjali and Pilichina Muraliki were wonderfully composed and shot aesthetically.
  • Veteran playback singer SPB dubbed for Girish Kharnad in this film which gave it the nativity as well as the brilliant impact to the overall film
  • Comedy Sequence is one of the undisputable highlights in the film because of the writing power of Jandhyala!
