Manchi Kutumbam story at a glance

Manchi Kutumbam is a family entertainer based on  a Tamil movie named Motor Sundaram Pillai and a Hindi Film Gruhasthu. This film got a good critical acclaim and is termed as one of the best pictures which came in ANR and Janaki combination. It was well received by the audience too. ANR once said that Janaki has a special place in the list of yesteryear female leads he has acted with. This fact can be evident by watching Janaki’s performance in Manchi Kutumbam. She even dubbed for the character of Juliet in the sequence of Romeo Juliet for this film. The role of Juliet was adorned by Vijayasree.

Story Details:
Venugopala Rao (ANR) is a businessman who has a happy family. His family comprises of an understanding wife Shantha (Shaavukaru Janaki) , two college going daughters (Vijayanirmala, Vijayasree), a widowed elder sister (Hemalatha) and a nephew Pandu (Chalam) who looks after the happenings in the house. Venugopala Rao’s daughters fall for two handsome looking men (Krishna , Chandramohan). Meanwhile, Pandu loves the daughter(Geethanjali) of station master . Venugopala Rao spends little time with the family and spends more time in business tours. One day, a young man arrives in the house claiming to be the son of Venugopala Rao and he was forced to come there in order to pay the college fee before the last date. Shantha gets distraught knowing this and all the family members get devastated. When the family is in such mental turmoil, Venugopala Rao enters the scene and explains the flashback because the family members demand a strong explanation. Venugopala Rao was made to study by a richman (Gummadi). This richman has two daughters Shantha  and Sarada (Kanchana). Shantha secretly admires Venugopala Rao. Meanwhile Sarada and Venugopala Rao are in love. But with the request of the richman, Venugopala Rao marries Shantha. Sarada sacrifices her love for her beloved sister. Once Shantha and Venugopala Rao leave for Burma on a business tour. As it is the second world war era, due to bombing the couple gets separated. Venugopala Rao assumes that Shantha is dead and returns to India. In troubled circumstances he marries Sarada. Suddenly, Shantha comes back to India well alive. As a result,Venugopala Rao decides to stay with two wives without letting each other know about this. Sarada dies at a young age after giving birth to a son. The kid is none other than the young man who arrived in Venugopala Rao’s house for the fee. Shantha realizes the truth and looks after his sister’s son equally with her own children. Right from then Venugopala Rao’s family becomes a happy family.  The story ends on a happy note with the marriages of Venugopala Rao’s children.

Performances:
ANR is simply brilliant in the role of Venugopala Rao. This sort of roles are a cakewalk for such a brilliant actor like him. Shaavukaru Janaki is fantastic as the affectionate wife, a realized person and a caring mother to her children. She shares a unique chemistry with her co-star ANR. She excels in emotional scenes with ease. Chalam is very good as the nephew of the hero. Geethanajli is sweet as the love interest of Chalam.  Gummadi is adequate as the richman. Vijayanirmala, Vijayasree, Chandramohan and Krishna are good as the youngsters.  Kanchana gets a memorable role as Sarada in the film.

Technical Aspects:
Athreya’s heart touching dialogues are the lifeline of the film. His strong lines with emotional impact are often impactful for the viewer.  S.P.Kodandapani’s melodious music and Arudra, Kosaraju’s lyrics are breathtaking. Manase Andala Brundavanam, Tyagaseelivamma Mahila, Preminchuta Pillala Vanthu, Evaru Leni Chota Idhigo Chinna Mata, Neelo Emundho Emo Manasu Ninne Valachindhi became all time hits.
