Pelli Kanuka story at a glance

Any competent actor needs a good break to prove their worth. Hits in the beginning of their respective careers help them to achieve the same. Though talented actresses like Krishna Kumari and B. Saroja earned good name with their work earlier, Pelli Kanuka helped them to get such break in Telugu Cinema. This film is a remake of Tamil hit Kalyana Parisu and has a unique speciality about it. While B.Saroja acted as female lead in both Telugu and Tamil versions, ANR acted as the first hero in Telugu version while he acted as second hero in the original Tamil version. His role in Tamil was reprised by Jaggaiah in Telugu. Popular singer A.M.Rajah scored music for both the versions. This film was remade in Hindi as ‘Nazrana’ starring Raj Kapoor and Vyjayanthi Mala in lead roles. It was also remade in Telugu later in 1982 as Devatha starring Sobhan Babu, Jayaprada and Sridevi and it became a commercial hit. K.Raghavendra Rao remade it in Hindi as Tohfa starring Jitendra, Jayaprada and Sridevi while it was produced by D.Ramanaidu. Ace film maker K.Balachander watched the Tamil version and he was so impressed with it that, he became a fan of Sridhar!

Story Details:
The story is based on two sisters whose father dies at a young age. The elder sister (Krishna Kumari) is quite affectionate towards her younger sister (B.Saroja) and takes care of the latter more like a mother. The elder sister even gives up studies and goes for sewing work so that she can make her younger sister study well. That is why the younger sister has great respect towards her. Meanwhile the younger sister studies in the same college where the hero (ANR) studies. The hero instantly falls for her but the girl mistakes his intentions and complains about him to the principal. As a result the hero gets debarred. With the help of his friend (Relangi), the hero joins in a job. Meanwhile the younger sister understands that hero is innocent and she also falls for him. Her mother and elder sister are unaware of this fact. Meanwhile the hero starts staying in the room about the sisters’ house. The elder sister also starts liking the hero and when he falls ill, she looks after him with care. The elder sister falls for the hero and for the sake of the sister’s happiness, the younger sister sacrifices her love. The hero reluctantly marries the elder sister and he gets a transfer in job. He doesn’t live a happy life because of his conflict between true love and responsibility.  The younger sister joins in a job and there the boss (Jaggaiah) proposes her. But she rejects it telling her sad story. Unable to continue in the job, the younger sister leaves it. Meanwhile, the elder sister gets pregnant and the younger sister arranges for the baby shower function. The elder sister misunderstands her husband being close to her younger sister and scolds her. A distraught younger sister leaves the house and even thinks of committing suicide. She is rescued by a richman (Gummadi) and hopes to make her his daughter in law. Meanwhile, the hero is blessed with a son but his wife dies in the delivery. The hero starts searching for the younger sister. Things take a twist when the rich man son is none other than the younger sister’s boss (Jaggaiah). He tells he is determined to marry her and eventually she agrees. The hero realizes about the wedding and starts to meet her. He gets injured in between but he relentlessly goes but sadly realizes that the wedding is commenced. Looking at it, he writes a letter to her and gives the baby boy as the “Wedding Gift” (Pelli Kanuka) and leaves the place.

Performances:
ANR is highly adorable as the hero and a person with high emotional quotient. His performance in emotional scenes is commendable. He shares a different yet interesting chemistry with his co-stars Krishna Kumari and B.Saroja. Krishna Kumari is quite good as the female lead and a sister who works hard for the family. B.Saroja is sweet as the second female lead and gets good scope to perform. Jaggaiah is perfect as the boss who falls for the heroine. Gummadi is tailor made for the richman’s role. Relangi is nice as the friend of the hero.

Technical Aspects:
Tamil filmmaker Sridhar has written the story, screenplay for this film. He made many brilliant family dramas later which enthralled the audience. The story is handled with exceptional care and interest by him. Dialogues by Athreya retain the Telugu nativity perfectly. P.Suseela sang the songs in Tamil original and earned great admiration by the Tamil audience from then. She even got the national award for her great renditions in this film. Music by A.M.Rajah is melodious and songs like ‘Vaaduka Marichedavela’, ‘Kannula tho palakarinchu Valapula’, ‘Ekantha Sayantramu Madhi Neekai Vechenu’, ‘Aade Paade Pasivada ‘ (Happy and Pathos versions), ‘Akkayya Seemantham Chakkani Bava Ku Aanandam’ became all time hits.
