Needless to say, the film Kantara has sparked much controversy about the authenticity of the "folklore" portrayed in the film. Although a few claim it to be accurate, many Adivasi activists and spokespersons have come out calling the film to be "Hindu-washed". While the debate is still going on, another legal block has jolted the film.

A popular music band from Kerala, 'Thaikkudam Bridge', filed a copyright infringement suit, stating that the song was a rip-off of its most acclaimed song called 'Navarasam', which was released five years ago.

In an update about the case, the band posted on its social media "The unavoidable similarities between our IP "Navarasam" and "Varaha Roopam" in terms of audio is therefore a blatant infringement of copyright laws. From our standpoint the line between "Inspired" and "Plagiarized" is distinct and indisputable and therefore we will be seeking legal action against the creative team responsible for this."
