Evolution of Brother- Sister Sentiment in Telugu Cinema!

After the much hyped up love stories and mother-son or father-son relationships, it is the obvious to witness more importance given to Brother-Sister sentiment in Telugu Films.  Almost every Tollywood hero irrespective of their image tried the role of a brother who is greatly concerned about his sister. On the eve of Raksha Bandhan today, let us explore how this unique sentiment evolved in the world of Telugu Cinema.

Brother-Sister sentiment was quite melodramatic and weepy when it came to senior actors like ANR, Sr NTR and Krishna. These films either showed Brother in a higher light who can go to any extent in helping his sister and get her out of troubles. Mostly the sister is shown as a damsel in distress who pleads her brother to help her out from personal struggles. There was little for a sister to do or the help doesn’t reciprocate in any manner. Movies like Rakta Sambandham, Chitti Chellelu and Dr Chakravarthy are classic examples of this sort.

But when the 90s decade arrived, the next generation heroes like Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Venkatesh and Balakrishna retained this trend by being the savior to a sweet sister. Chiranjeevi did an out and out sentimental subject like Hitler which had him as a brother for five sisters! Nagarjuna explored the fun as well as sentimental side of this relationship with movies like Hello Brother. Venkatesh and Balakrishna followed the trend perfectly by acting as a considerate brother and numerous films came in this genre.

However, one film changed the course of brother- sister relationship on silver screen. It didn’t showcase brother in the giving end or sister in the receiving end. It only showed brother-sister sharing a bond so unique and greater than friendship one can imagine. It is Karunakaran’s Tholi Prema which had Pawan Kalyan as the new age brother and Vasuki as the doting sister.  Here, the sister takes the front seat by helping her brother out to win his love at first look!

It was when Telugu Audience realized that Brother- Sister sentiment needn’t be weepy or sad all the time but they can share own moments of fun and mischievousness. The next generation heroes Jr NTR did a full fledged melodramatic film Rakhi which showed the universality of this relationship. We wish our director will portray this lovely relationship in the most realistic and endearing form possible in near future - fingers crossed!
