Atma Gouravam story at a glance

After beginning her acting career with Preminchi Chudu as female lead opposite Jaggaiah in the year 1966, Kanchana earned a good name in Veerabhimanyu opposite Sobhan Babu. She immediately got a chance to work with ANR in the film Atma Gouravam. It is interesting to see Rajasri being the side heroine in this film as well as Preminchi Chudu as well. However it was Kanchana who got a good role which had ample scope of performance and acting skills. This is the first film of Kala Tapasvi K.Vishwanath and prominent character actor and writer Gollapudi Maruthi Rao began his writing career with this film.

Story Details:
A Zamindar (Relangi) in the town doesn’t have children. A farmer Ramaiah (Gummadi) who looks after his lands in the village has a younger brother named Srinivasa Rao(Master Adinarayana) who is quite intelligent. The Zamindar adopts Srinivasa Rao as a son. The Zamindar’s wife Santana Lakshmi (Suryakantham) doesn’t like this. She wants her sister son Venu as an adopted son. As per his wife’s wish, the Zamindar adopts Venu as well. Srinivasa Rao and Venu study in a hostel. Cut from there, Ramaiah has a niece named Savitri .Her parents die at an early age and she grows in Ramaiah’s house. Incidentally, Savitri’s mother takes a word from Ramaiah about getting her daughter married to Srinivasa Rao (ANR after growing up). The kids grow up to be Srinivasa Rao (ANR), Venu (Chalam) and Savitri (Kanchana ). Srinivas attends college and his classmate (Rajasri) falls in love with him. Meanwhile Santana Lakshmi ill treats Srinivas by not allowing him to meet his elder brother Ramaiah. When the letter carrying news of Ramaiah’s wife death arrives, Santana Lakshmi hides it by tearing off the letter. Ramaiah feels sad because his younger brother Srinivasa Rao didn’t even attend the funeral of his mother figure. Meanwhile, Ramaiah arrives in Zamindar house to ask for Srinivasa Rao’s hand to his niece Savitri as per the word given. But Santana Lakshmi insults him and it is when Ramaiah questions her selfish idea of adopting his brother and then impending their self respect.

An upset Ramaiah looks for another match for his niece but the groom’s side keep a condition for it. The bride groom has a mentally challenged sister and they ask Ramaiah to marry her so that the marriage can happen. Ramaiah agrees to the shocking condition but Savitri doesn’t like this. She constantly admires Srinivasa Rao and runs away on the night before the wedding. She reaches the town and sadly meets with an accident. Incidentally she is rescued by Srinivasa Rao’s classmate. Rest of the film deals about what happens to the lead characters.

Performances:
ANR is very good as the idealistic youth who lives with foster family. He shares a decent chemistry with his co star Kanchana. Kanchana is excellent as Savitri who is head over heels in love with the hero. Gummadi gets a pivotal role as the villager high on self respect. Suryakantham pulls off the arrogant rich lady role with ease. Relangi is decent as the Zamindar. Rajasri is good as the classmate of the hero. Chalam, Master Adinarayana Rao and others are fine in their respectable roles.

Technical Aspects:
Though the story is based on Yaddanapudi Sulochana Rani’s work, writers Gollapudi Maruthi Rao and Bhamidipati Radhakrishna add a great cinematic touch to the overall film. The crystal clear depiction of characterizations remains to be a highlight of the film. Music by S.Rajeshwara Rao is at its melodious best with all songs becoming hit. Preminchi Pelli Chesuko, Preminchanidhe Pelladanani, Paruvamu Ponge Velalo, Oka Poola Baanam, Ranani Raalenani, Valapulu Virisina Poovule, Maarajuloccharu are some of the best songs. The songs not only became a trademark for Annapurna Pictures production house but also for K.Vishwanath’s penchant for music. K.Vishwanath pulls off a perfect drama film in his debut itself.
