Megha Sandesam story at a glance

After the phenomenal success and influence of Shankarabharanam, Dasari wanted to make a film on artistic lines by moving away from his usual style of film making. With the selection of title itself he made sure about the class of audience he wants to target. His tremendous effort in making the film an artistic epic is clearly seen in the film. Dasari himself said that his mentor Palagummi Padmaraju’s ideas are foundations of the film as well. Padmaraju is very fond of poet Devulapalli and he made sure relevant sequences are included in the film which would suit the poet’s lines from his song collection.  Dasari was acting and directing another film ‘Swayam Varam’  then starring Sobhan Babu and Jayaprada in the lead roles. The filming of Swayam Varam commenced for 30 days and the team worked hard to finalize the songs for Megha Sandesam in this period. While 26 songs were composed, only 11 were used in the film. Jayasudha lost the national award for that year with just one vote difference for her amazing performance in this epic film.

Story Details:
Ravindrababu (ANR) is a great poet, lover of nature and arts, and has a peculiar poetic and sensitive mindset. He gets married to a rustic and a simple woman Parvathi (Jayasudha). Her brother Jagannatham (Jaggaiah) is extremely fond of his sister. Though Ravindrababu loves Parvathi as a wife, he fails to get inspiration from her as a poet. The couple lack good wavelength match. It is when he meets an artist personified woman Padma (Jayaprada). Her dance skills, expressions, looks and the poetic touch makes Ravindrababu express himself as a poet. Right from then he transforms to an admirer of Padma. Parvathi feels bad for this thinking Padma- a woman belonging to prostitute family has snatched her husband. Jagannatham enters the scene and warns Padma not to disturb Ravindrababu’s family. As a result, Ravindrababu gets deeply hurt. He becomes isolated with the fond memories of Padma and explains his grief in a poetic way to the nature and clouds (Hence the name Megha Sandesam). The film ends with his demise after meeting his wife.

Performances:
This film features ANR in a tailor made role as he is known for the romantic image. He had already enthralled the audience with poetic roles of Jayadeva and Kalidasu which featured him as a lover. As a result, it was a cakewalk for him to act in a role which features a poetic lover. However, this film is more challenging because it deals with an anti sentiment of a married man finding love and admiration towards somebody who is not his wife. Women audience would find it difficult to see a hero in such role. Jayasudha is extremely good as the innocent wife of a poet. Her mild histrionics and mellowed expressions added so much to the film. Jayaprada is stunningly beautiful as well as great in performance as Padma. Her dances and expressions bring grace to the overall film. Jaggaiah is very good as the considerate brother of Parvathi.

Technical Aspects:
Dasari took a sensitive story line with poetic touch and made it convincing to all classes of audience. He brought a perfect balance between the poetic Hero and the practical societal norms and family values. He goes away from his usual style of lengthy conversations, thought provoking lines and heavy sentiment and gives a mellowed touch to the overall film. Ramesh Naidu’s melodious music adds much to the artistic feel of the film. Ninnati Daaka Silanaina, Aakulo Aakunai, Navarasa Suma Malika, Paadana Vani Kalyani ga (Carnatic exponent Balamurali Krishna is seen as well as rendered this song), Mundhu Telisina Prabhu, Radhika Krishna Radhika. A very special mention is needed for Yesudas’s rendition Aakasa Desana Aashada Maasana during the climax of the film which acts as the soul of the film. His emotional rendition with great voice added perfectly to the scene.
