Ashwamedham story at a glance

Ashwamedham is a different action entertainer from Balakrishna and Sobhan Babu in the lead. With Ashwini Dutt’s high production values, the film was made in a big budget. Great storyline, fun elements, commercial elements and songs made it a memorable film in his career.

Story Details:
Abhimanyu (Sobhan Babu) is a police officer who catches a hardened criminal Vyagra ( Amrish Puri) and earns good name in his department.  His younger brother Kireeti (Balakrishna) is a pilot who is quite smart and they all have a happy family environment.  Abhimanyu and Kireeti are affectionate brothers who have strong bonding. Meanwhile Sowjanya (Nagma) is a journalist who plans to bring out some smuggling happenings relating to Vyagra’s gang. It is when she meets Kireeti in Jaipur and they fall in love. Pratibha (Meena) is a doctor and family friend of Abhimanyu’s family and falls for Kireeti. Rest of the film is about how the lead brothers fight over Vyagra and his crime kingdom.

Performances:
Balakrishna is fantastic as the daring and dashing pilot and performs well in sentimental scenes as well. His onscreen chemistry with Sobhan Babu as brother works wonders. Sobhan Babu gets a memorable role of a valiant police officer away from his usual romantic image. Geetha is adorable as the wife of Sobhan Babu’s character. Nagma gets a role which has right balance between glamour and performance. Meena is adequate as the second female lead but her role becomes important in the climax. Amrish Puri delivers another brilliant performance as the villain Vyagra. Kota Srinivasa Rao, Brahmanadam and Allu Ramalingaiah get good roles.

Technical Aspects:
The main asset of the film is the strong screenplay given by novelist Yandamuri Veerendranath. The dialogues are peculiar. The film is high on production values where one scene is shot exclusively in Palace on Wheels train which goes from New Delhi to Jaipur. The climax is grandly shot in the deserts of Rajasthan and Mysore Palace as well. Music by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja is excellent with great re-recording. Songs like Oh Prema, and Jum Chaku became good hits. Direction by K.Raghavendra Rao is at his commercial best.
