Padaharella Vayasu story at a glance

At an era when there were family oriented films and great actresses like Vanisri and Sarada were ruling the Telugu Cinema World, then came a film in K.Raghavendra Rao’s direction which showcased an innocent looking girl with a fresh face in a full length role. The girl was none other than the talented Sridevi who already made her mark as a competent child artist by then. But Padaharella Vayasu redefined her career in Tollywood and proved that she is not just a glam doll but also a stunning performance oriented artist. It was a defining film for Chandramohan and Mohan Babu as terrific actors as well.

Story Details:
This film is a remake of Bharatiraja’s Tamil blockbuster Padhinaaru Vaythinile. The basic storyline is about the journey of a young woman named Malli (Sridevi) who is exploited by the evil society and how she realizes the real truth about people.

Malli is initially a very innocent village girl with a dreamy approach towards the ways of world. She dreams of the man of her dreams and has a thing for beautiful things and glamour. She also has an ambition of becoming a school teacher and works on it. Meanwhile, a veterinary doctor arrives in the village and everybody get charmed with his good looks. People talk about his wealthy life and the goodness he has and Malli obviously starts falling for the guy. But the guy is highly materialistic and he just exploits Malli and when she asks for marriage, he abandons her and leaves the village. Malli’s mother dies of heart attack when she comes to know about the affair making Malli alone. The only relative she has in life is his cousin Gopalakrishna (Chandramohan) who is looked down by all in the village for his not so good looks. Simhachalam (Chandra Mohan) is a village goon who eyes for Malli and often annoys her with his rough moves. Gopalakrishna is highly caring about Malli and always tries to protect her from troubles. Though Malli initially finds him disgusting for his looks and rawness, she slowly realizes that good looks and glamour are not the prerequisites of life but there is a greater definition of love.

Performances:
Sridevi is excellent as the village belle Malli in the film. She looks ravishing in the song “Sirimalle Poova” which earned lot of young fans all over AP during the time of the film’s release. She excels in emotional scenes and brilliant in histrionics. Chandramohan is phenomenal in the role of considerate Gopalakrishna. His raw looks and innocent dialogue delivery works wonders on the audience. Mohan Babu is terrific as the bad guy with fantastic dialogue delivery.

Technical Aspects:
Dialogues for the film were written by Jandhyala who already became regular for K.Raghavendra Rao by then. Though the actual story was written by Bharatiraja in Tamil, Jandhyala made sure that the Telugu Nativity isn’t missed. Music by Chakravarthi is melodious and every Telugu person remembers the eternal female solo “Sirimalle Poova” sung by S.Janaki. Though the song was taken from the Tamil original, the Telugu version became extremely popular as well. Direction by K.Raghavendra Rao is crisp and captivating.
