Varakatnam story at a glance

Varakatnam can be termed as one of the cult films which dealt with the social evil like Dowry prevailing in our society since ages. In fact, this film was the last for Krishna Kumari as the female lead. It was also the last film which had her act opposite Sr.NTR. After this, she acted in Manavudu-Danavudu, Bharya Biddalu (She acted as wife of ANR in this film but the role was less), Neramu Siksha, Yashoda Krishna but all these roles were more of supporting kind sans glamour.

Story Details:
The story is based on two neighbouring villages. For one village the head famer (Nagabhushanam) is high on self respect, and sternness. He has a son (Sr.NTR). In another village the head farmer (Mikkilineni) is also quite confident but has little less property compared to the other village’s head. His son (Satyanarayana) is a short tempered person who gets into fights for no reason. He is complemented by a sensible wife ( Savitri). He has a sister (Krishna Kumari) whose marriage gets fixed with the son of first village’s head. In the bridegroom’s family one person (Allu Ramailngaiah) is a troublemaker who injects the idea of taking more dowry to the bride groom’s father. The first village head rightfully goes to the bride’s father and demands more dowry. He goes overboard by even testing the worthiness of the jewelry gifted by the bride’s party. The second village head’s son gets furious and he goes over argument with the first village head. As a result the wedding gets called off. The bride groom is dragged away by his father and the poor bride is in tears. Both the families make plans to get this bride and bride groom married to different people but the first village head’s son opposes this with confidence. He reaches the bride’s village one night and even marries her. Savitri looks at this and blesses the couple. Rest of the film is about how the couple fights over the differences in two families and whether they live happily ever after.

Performances:
Sr.NTR is excellent as the contemporary youth who doesn’t hesitate to question social evils. Nagabhushanam is ideal as the hero’s father who falls for empty words. Satyanarayana gets a role of substance as the herione’s brother. Krishna Kumari is very good as the female lead who faces rejection in the wedding, fighting over social evil and eventually living with her husband happily ever after. Mikkilineni does brilliantly as the female lead’s father.  Allu Ramalingaiah gives more weight to his troublemaking character. Raavi Kondala Rao got a good comedy centric role which has a punchline ‘Maha Prabho” – becoming quite famous those days. Savitri gives an earthly performance as a sensible wife to a short tempered husband. Relangi, Suryakantham, Padmanabham and Chandrakala did good comedy roles which also have sensible substance dealing with the dowry issue.

Technical Aspects:
Dialogues by Maddipatla Soori and Samudrala Junior are suitable for family drama and also make the audience think about the worth of these social evils. T.V.Raju’s music is quite melodious and songs like ‘Idhena Mana Sampradayamidhena’, ‘Divinelu Mukkoti Devatala Sakshi Ga’, ‘Sye Sye Jodedlabandi’ became good hits. Sr.NTR’s direction entertainingly gives a social message.
