Majnu 1987 story at a glance

Majnu was a testing film for Nagarjuna to prove himself as worthy as his father ANR in acting as an estranged lover. Directed by Dasari Narayana Rao, this film was highly popular for its youthfulness and good performances.

Story Details:
Rajesh (Nagarjuna) is a racy youngster who falls in love with Alekhya (Rajani).  Things go well when Rajesh and Alekhya plan to get married and it is when a root of suspicion lands in Rajesh’s mind through a friend.  The suspicion is something about the character of Alekhya and when Rajesh enquires about it, the latter gets furious. She questions Rajesh asking how can he suspect her by believing a friend’s word and also comes to a conclusion that his love is not worth of accepting. The impulsive natured Rajesh also finds her questioning arrogant and the couple breaks up. But the real trouble starts for Rajesh after Alekhya leaves him and he starts feeling sorry for his impulsive nature. Alekhya marries another guy (Sudhakar)shown by her parents and Majnu is distraught. The rest of the story is about what would happen to Majnu and whether Alekhya forgives him

Performances:
Nagarjuna was very good as the racy youngster initially and a realized person later in the film. His acting in “Idhi Tholi Raatri” was most talked about when the film was released. Rajani is excellent as the strong female lead with individuality and self respect- depicting the modern 80s woman. K.R.Vijaya, Sowcar Janaki, Gummadi, Satyanarayana, Sudhakar and so on acted well in their respective roles. Bollywood heroine Moon Moon Sen is also present in this film

Technical Aspects:
The dialogues and story were written by director Dasari Narayana Rao himself and he does wonders in the emotional scenes.  Editing by Krishnam Raju is neat but could have been better. Music by Laxmikanth Pyaarelal is melodious and worth hearing.  Dasari Narayana Rao is a master director for  love stories like this and he excels.
