iQlik Movies Rating: 2.25/5

Sundeep Kishan, who is looking for a hit for a long time, is now back with his new film, Michael. Directed by Renjit Jeyakodi, this movie features Divyansha Kaushik as the female lead. Here is the review of the movie. Check it out.

Story:
Michael (Sundeep Kishan) is raised by a Mumbai-based gangster named Guru (Gautham Menon). Michael follows Guru's footsteps and becomes an emerging gangster. The attention towards Michael is not tolerated by his counterpart Amarnadh (Varun Sandesh). One fine day, Guru gets attacked and Michael hunts for the responsible people. The revelations he comes across form the main plot of the film.

Performances:
Sundeep Kishan has put his heart and soul into the film. His effort can be seen in his physical transformation. However, his character is poorly-written and thus, though it is good, it doesn't end up as a memorable one.

Divyansha Kaushik gets a meaty role and she is decent. Gautham Menon and Varun Sandesh have done justice to their characters. Vijay Sethupathi's screen presence is terrific. Varalakshmi Sarathkumar and Anasuya were wasted in poorly etched characters.

Technical Departments:
Writer and director Renjit Jeyakodi chooses the 90s backdrop for this movie. He has an interesting premise and a terrific cast. The world is built in an interesting way but it is the story which ends up as a disappointment in this film's case.

Sam CS's songs are not that great but he delivers well with the background score. Cinematographer Kiran Kooushik's work is terrific. The production values are top-notch. The editing by R Sathyanarayanan could have been better as the film is quite long with a lot of unnecessary scenes.

Analysis:
Gangster flicks have become a trend in Indian cinema these days. But if not done well, these films may end up as huge disasters. Michael has an interesting premise and a great cast but it falters in the story department. The conflict between two emerging gangsters who are working under an established gangster is not a new story. We have seen it many times. Instead of presenting it in a new way, Renjit further damaged his story through poor writing.

The first half takes time to set up the world. The interval twist can be predicted and is not exciting enough. The second half is boring as well. On the whole, Michael is a wasted attempt that features talented actors.

Plus Points:
Cinematography
Making Style
Background Score

Minus Points:
Poor writing
Poor characterizations
Feels lengthy
Routine Storyline

One-Line Verdict: Below-Average Gangster Drama!
