About the campaign MARD

The city of Mumbai was very upset after the rape and murder of a Mumbai lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha in august 2012. Bollywood personality Farhan Akhtar thought of the idea after that accident. He had launched the campaign of MARD in March of 2013. The name is inspired from a phrase Men Against Rape and Discrimination. The phrase is itself very inspirational and the campaign instantly became very famous. It attained many supports from all the Bollywood actors like Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Big B Amitabh Bacchan and many more. It was also supported by many Telugu actors like Mahesh Babu and so on. So the campaign became very successful. It also became very popular on the social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. His posts on the site Twitter was actively supported and re Twitted by Shabana Azmi, Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor , Arjun Rampal, Boman Irani and many more. A logo was even created in red and black with the name MARD and the letter A was designed as a mustache. Farhan kept the thrill on with regular updates and posts.

Campaign Through the IPL Matches

Farhan also popularized the campaign against the IPL matches. He distributed about 70,000 mustaches between the spectators in the Kolkata Knight Riders match on 26th of April at Eden gardens. His initiative was even supported by many crickets like Adam Gilchrist, Gautam Gambhir and many more. They even extended further support by wearing them at the stadium. So the campaign comes to be successful throughout India.

Engagement of Sports and Films Personalities in the Campaign

The campaign became more powerful when cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Telegu star Mahesh Babu joined it in June 2013. They even gave their voices to recite a poem written by Javed Akhtar. The poem has been released widely in all the popular websites. The poem even has been translated into many other languages like Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and various other languages. The original poem was written in Hindi. Mahesh Babu recited the poem for the language Telugu. The Telugu Lyrics were given by Chandrabose and he did a wonderful job.

Conclusion

In today’s India of increased crime against women, all these initiatives are very important to create awareness among the common people. The Telugu actors and other stars have really done a great job. Farhan has even planned to go to various educational institutions to create awareness about the equality of men and women in this 21st century. I support the initiative and voice my protest against rape.
